Writing Lyrics for the FBI

December 15th, 2008 | Category: Poem of the Day

He’s chewing on new lyrics like cerebral cud,
trying to separate the gravel from the mud.
Doing cryptographer’s research in the back of his head,
undercover homework from the bottom of his bed.
I used to think he was a rocket science guy,
but now he’s writing lyrics for the FBI.

THE HEATH

December 15th, 2008 | Category: PoeArtry

THE HEATH

Weekend escapism wilderness nature hike

Carving previously unexplored wasteland trails

Trudging through prickly thistle bramble

Wading across knee-deep stony rills

Sterile bleak moor harvesting melancholy

Evaporated teardrops pools of sorrow

Maudlin dried up peat bogs

Luminous stingray sunstroke draining vitality

THE FUNERAL

December 12th, 2008 | Category: PoeArtry

THE FUNERAL

Platform moved back in time

Transient stranger within looking out

Icy faceless reflections rolled eyes

Raised brows petty accusations blur

Wrapped in unshakable snowy blanket

Cemetery flurries brushed with dandruff

Frosty breath scatterbrain patterns curtained

Train windows sealed up tight

THE SHOCK OF THE OLD

December 10th, 2008 | Category: Essays on Poetry

Many poets these days put sex scenes into their work but few do it interestingly.  Take Geoff Stevens and his poem The Bit player And The Actor; for example, “She has one man/That she doesn’t like much/He comes over in his lunch hour/Just for sex/And that’s all he’s for”.  As David Daiches says in his book The Present Age, “A few swear words do not make a new poetic style,” but unfortunately most poets who write about sex think four letter words are not only raunchy but enough.  Certain poets of the past really got down to the nitty-gritty.

EPOCH

December 10th, 2008 | Category: PoeArtry

EPOCH

Rivers no longer flow into

Oceanic caldera boiling reduced to

Simmer steam open sea evaporation

Lid pried off plug pulled

Seeping moisture slowly dried up

Still life seascapes drained mercilessly

Wave swells lay dying on

Distant shores naked refuse exposed

Love Song

December 09th, 2008 | Category: Poem of the Day

You are so beautiful
But yet you are so full of love that is unexpressed
I feel the pureness of your heart
even thousands of miles apart
your love is so close to me
may I be the instrument to express your love song

Double Dutch

December 08th, 2008 | Category: Poem of the Day

I use to watch the girls Double Dutch
slam
They were strong and had rhythm
Long winded and amazing

Double Dutch girls were the ones that spoke up
Were challenging

Me, I played stickball Read more

CASINO

December 08th, 2008 | Category: PoeArtry

CASINO

No clocks shades of addiction

Drawn day indistinguishable from night

Rotating mirrored ball twinkling stars

Crystal sconce fixtures teardrop prisms

The setting sun flipped like

Tossed coin suspended in midair

Calling heads landing tails clinked

Into Lady Luck slut machine

MAD HATTERS

Hats tipped saluting borderless frontiers

Distinctive tribal headdresses crowning glory

Flipped lid cover-ups portable roofs

Politicked off thrown into ring

Bull-legged cowboys ten gallon Stetsons

Sunken flattop boaters dented homburgs

Scottish tams wide-brimmed flappable sunbonnets

Silk lining fedoras deeply felt

WARBLERS

December 03rd, 2008 | Category: PoeArtry

WARBLERS

Afloat in the first magnitude

Rain pooled by slanted drizzle

Hovering above their own reflections

Singing and grieving crested angels

Spherical melodies never before heard

Glorious cascading notes from afar

Euphonic fluted descant airs as

Foreign tongues deliquesce attuned ears

SLEEPING THIRTEEN

December 02nd, 2008 | Category: Poem of the Day

Everyone crawls inside the clock-cave
just as you do each night,
girl-needling-through-the-storm,
and light drains from each tidal body.

Thoughts flash like fish
slipping from orange nets
in the sandshifting
phantasma of dream
