LONGSOME NARRATIVE

 

My life a novel misadventure

Twisted suspenseful surprises wondrous disbelief

Incredible characters plot thickening itself

Protagonist championing own starring role

 

            Intent on staying relatively sane

            Avoiding pratfalls estranger gone berserk

            Neurotic coherence striped leopard bafflement

            Skunkbloom the last poof defense

 

Top shelf mothballed closet skeletons

Suffocating boxed spiral-bound hardcover journal

I somehow never wrote in

Scribbled doodles the only entries

 

            Once upon eaten swallowed whole

            Feral wild humanimal growing inside

            Pawing out-of-reach musky hero-hood

            Shriveled hide grown out of

 

Envisioning myself with deciduous antlers

Clearly invisible changing season trophies

Perhaps in my next life

I’ll be reborn as Stag

 

            Complicating too pat perfect ending

            Gilded lily improvising unscripted conclusion

            Trite illusions carried to extremes

            Leaving my borrowed self behind
