Ring

DDE will be a featured poet on Tuesday, August 19, during the Listen & Be Heard Radio Open Mic.
The weight on my hand is different
Yet welcome like an old friend
And brings me no burden
But even though it rests on but one finger
It affects my whole body
My heart beats stronger because of it
My mind thinks more clearly
My soul knows new joy
This is more than a piece of jewelry
It represents so much more
An end to my loneliness
A beginning to my family together again
The chance to watch my children grow
The spirited and wonderful children that they are
The privilege to lie next to my wife every night
The gorgeous and amazing woman that she is
To hear “daddy’s home!” when I come home from work
To gain reprieve from the problems of the day by hearing that
And facing the greetings of excited children
And a loving wife
This ring is my beacon of hope
Of a brighter and more fulfilled future
It represents my wanted,
No, my needed
Place in this world
And the only thing that shines brighter than this ring
Are the smiles on the faces of my wife and children
When I finally decided to put it back on
Those are smiles
I felt from across the world
